On a cold foggy morning on the Newfoundland Banks, two dory fisherman start hand-lining for cod. Hand-lining was sometimes preferred to long-line trawl lines as it was said to catch larger fish in better condition.
Big cod could often weigh 60lb or more. Hard, back-breaking work, the men might make many trips back to their schooner to unload and get more bait, only to spend half the night gutting and cleaning their catch.
